Although I took Art as a main subject when studying to be a Primary School teacher, and spent many years drawing and painting, it was not until 2003, whilst living in America, that I started to take art seriously.
I studied under many renowned American artists with particular emphasis on pastel painting, portraiture, landscapes and, more recently, oil painting.
During my time in the US I won several awards for my paintings, as well as being selected into many juried shows. I was also selected for membership into the Pastel Society of America, the American Artists Professional League and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, all in New York City.
Having traveled to, and lived in, many parts of the world, where I have seen people and places that inspired me to paint, I want to show how much beauty and wonder there is in the world, even in everyday objects, people and animals. I am moved by people’s expressions, and wish to capture their thoughts and feelings. I get a thrill from the challenge of securing a likeness, seeking out the smallest detail and responding to it with sensitivity, delicacy, and bringing that person to life on my paper.
My paintings convey strong feelings, as I wish to elicit an emotional response as well as understanding and empathy. I use bold colors to create the emotion, overemphasizing the beautiful colors around us that are so often taken for granted.
Mostly I paint in the studio using reference photos. I use the paint to give a realistic and glowing quality to my paintings, and am able to create texture, depth and transparency as well as boldness and light to balance the paintings.
Since returning to the UK, I have continued to study oil painting and have developed a particular interest in flower painting, though I still enjoy landscapes, portraits, animals and anything else that sparks my creative interest.
I take commissions for portraits and other paintings. I am happy to work solely from photographs; a meeting and photo session can be helpful if practical.
